Transmission Media of Networking

In this blog we discuss about transmission media. Transmission media are actually located below the physical layer and are directly controlled by the physical Layer , transmission media belong to layer ZERO.

A transmission media can be defined as anything that can carry data from a source to a destination. It could be free space, metallic cable or optical fiber cable.

The transmission media basically can be classified as

-        Guided Media

-        Unguided Media

Now the classification of guided media are given below

Twisted pair cable

A twisted pair cable consists of to conductor (generally coper wire).each with its own plastic insulation and twisted together.

One of the wire is used to carry signals to the receiver, and the other is used only as a ground reference. The receiver uses the difference between the two.

In addition to the signal sent by the sender on one of the wires, interference (noise) and crosstalk may affect both wires and create unwanted signals.

If the two wires are parallel, the effect of these unwanted signals is not the same in both wires because they are different location relative to the noise or crosstalk sources.

Twisted Pair Cable also classified as

UTP

The most common twisted pair used in communication is unshielded twisted pair. It consists of two unshielded wires twisted around each other.

Stp

Shielded twisted pair cable was originally designed by IBM (INTERNATIONAL BUSSINESS MACHINE) for token ring networks that include two individual wires covered with a foil shielding, which prevent electromagnetic interference, thereby transporting data faster.

Categories

The Electronics Industrial Association (EIA) has developed standards to classify unshielded twisted pair cable into seven Categories. Categories are determined by cable quality, with 1 as the lowest and 7 as the highest. Each EIA category is suitable for specific uses.

Connectors

The most common UTP connector is RJ45 (RJ stands for Registered jack). The RJ45 is a keyed connector, meaning the connector can be inserted in only one way.

Coaxial cable ( coax)

Coaxial cable is a type of shielded and insulated copper cable that is used in computer networks and to deliver cable TV services to end users. It has higher frequency range than twisted pair cable. It is also known as coax, is a central core conductor of solid or stranded wire (usually copper) enclosed in an insulating sheath, which is in turn
